Hey, I've finished this game some years ago. Made some videos to youtube about
the final castle too. Was a real pain. Those videos are also long and boring as
I didn't edit them in any way. Just did some live commentary over them. The

I Accidentally Closed Terminal, Says I'm Logged In Twice

I was using terminal on linux, and all of a sudden, while trying to delete some text (I know it's ctrl-h), I closed the terminal. I was playing LORD at the time, and after trying to get past the stats before the main
screen, it just says I can't be in two places at once. What do I do here? Thanks for any help you can provide!

Sorry for the trouble. It took LORD a bit to figure out that you weren't
connected. Sometimes this can take a while, but it figures it out after a
while, then you'll be able to log back in.

Dosbox Multiplayer

Ive been bored for sometime and searched but couldnt find any public retro
servers, if you would like just comment with a game and see if you can connect
to the dosbox ipx server: ipx.soulsphere.org 10000, this server allows you to
play ipx dos games over the internet, if your in america: theres a east coast

Yes it works on mobile. I actually voted twice. I was voter #17 from my pc.
It's the plus symbol next to the number of votes. About halfway down the left
column of that page you'll see "votes" and then some number (the tally of
votes). So I decided to try it from mobile and see if it worked. I typed in the
same url (make sure to use the www first and type the whole long address) and
the same screen came up on my phone. Halfway down is "votes" and it said 17. So
I clicked the blue plus sign next to the 17 and it turned it into 18.
Refreshing the pc, that page now says 18 votes. So yeah it works. I tried to
click the plus again on the pc but it was hip to me by then and told me only
one vote is allowed. (oops on voting from phone and pc but I was testing lol)

The prize options this time around are dungeon theme tabletop games. I own
Welcome to the Dungeon and Dungeon Mayhem. One Card Dungeon is on its way :)

Of the two I own we have enjoyed playing and each have their own unique play
mechanics.

I tend to not be a huge fan of dice games, but I'll give One Card Dungeon a
shot. I believe it's a solo game, unlike the other two. There are a couple of
other dungeon crawler solo play tabletop games I have that are fun and have
offered as prize options in the past: One Deck Dungeon and Deckbox Dungeons. Of
the two, I've really enjoyed playing Deckbox Dungeons and recommend the game to
anyone I can :)

In fact, I was so inspired from the play mechanics of Deckbox Dungeons that I
developed a small game with similar mechanics and gameplay: Ruins of Kaldore.

Alright, I had a nice fluffy "short story" post about who won this round, but
I've been fiddling with this text editor for the last thirty minutes, wrestling
with the broken color code system. So, I'll just say that the game is over and
the #1 Winner is indesputible.

Congratulations, winner! I came in late, so I didn't get to see much action,
but I had fun while it lasted!

This is a safe space, outside of the crazyness that is going on around the

Practical Use For Telnet In 2023?

I wonder, what is the practical use of telnet in modern time?
I mean, we can talk, we can play some text based games, but what is the practical use of this thing?
I'm asking, because i want to write a telnet based application, but i can't think of any good application of the telnet. Because most of people around me will never use it.

Only good use i can think of is making i a good application to connect to
bbses. You can try that with the TELNET protocol.

Good question! These days, due to its lack of encryption, most software tries
to not use telnet and SSH instead for connecting to servers. BBS software is an
exception, however all modern BBSes offer the ability to connect with SSH so
that the connection is secure. The SSH port for this BBS is 2222 if you wish to
connect using SSH instead of telnet.

There are still a few old devices that don't support SSH (or HTTPS, or other
encrypted protocols). Some 'legacy' BBS software has a telnet server but not
an SSH server, like DOS, OS/2 or Win16/early Win32 software included only
telnet, either because of computing power limitations or because that was
generally what people used. For those, you need a telnet client. Likewise, if
you want to use old DOS BBS terminal clients, the serial-to-TCP/IP adapters
(e.g., in Dosbox) for those really only support telnet out of the box. It is
possible to hack together something to use SSH with Telix under Dosbox for
example, but effectively you have to script something or telnet through your
local machine or something of that sort.

In general, though, it is recommended in this day and age to use SSH instead.
Syncterm for example supports SSH. If you use Telnet, anyone sniffing
(eavesdropping on) your packets, like your ISP or someone else on your wi-fi
network, can get your passwords and take over your session and pretend to be
you. In practice, this isn't usually a problem for BBS usage, but this is
mostly because people "don't care enough" about what you are doing to start
messing with it. If that bothers you, then SSH is probably the answer and I'd
encourage SysOps to promote use of SSH, to make BBS communications secure in
the same way as most other modern Internet communication.

Serial Connection Multiplayer

Ive found out how to get serial connection such as null modem and modem dial-up
working. Problem is, i need someone to test it from a acctuall distance to see
if it works, if you have a dial-up game like DOOM or HERETIC please be willing
to try test it, only 1 person can test at a time as modem usally supports only
2 players.

Hey there Dude1! Welcome to the BBS and thanks for joining!

I think the best tip I can offer is just to look around and explore! The
Courtyard (main menu) has a lot of options, but don't let that overwhelm you.

Most notable on the BBS are the old door games, most from the 90's. You'll find
those in the Fighter's Guild and the Mage's Guild. The most popular game on the
BBS is Legend of the Red Dragon (LORD). There are two games of that running:
the Tournament and Extreme.

You've already found the Bulletin Board, which is great. Because this is the
central hub for people to communicate on the BBS.

You can also check out The Oracle, which is unique to this BBS. She's kinda fun
to interact with.

Another place to check out is the Tavern. The cosysop and I usually hang out in
there on weekdays and we always try to be available for chat, so feel free to
stop on by!

I've found LORD recently, and so far I've gotten kind of hooked on the
whole 'door game experience.' I think part of it is it's all text-based,
but something about that makes it all the more interesting to play, in my
opinion.

I'll see if I can make it to the Tavern sometime, and that Oracle also
sounds like something interesting I could try out.

The problem is: I don't really know how to edit the menus.

You know, the starting page... Actually, I don't know how to modify ANYTHING on

Yes, the menu systems are in a baja file in /sbbs/exec/default.src. You can see in
there which keys have which responses, and which menu files are displayed. The menu
files are in /sbbs/text/menu.
There is a page on it here: http://wiki.synchro.net/custom:menu_files

There are also some steps around compiling thr menu file (with the baja executable) and
convincing synchronet to reload it without having to log out and back in. Let us know
how you get on!

Extreme Lord Won! Reset At Midnight And More Dragon Kills

Congratulations to Mariposa for slaying the 10 red dragons and winning Extreme
LORD!

It has been requested to increase the number of dragon kills since people are
able to use the IGMs so effectively and quickly make dragon kills.

I'll increase the number of heroic deeds (dragon kills) to 20 this time around
and see how it goes!

Hehehe Hello.

I just found this BBS and man, it's beautiful. I love this. I never really were
on a bulleting board, but I finally found a great one myself. I love how the
start is written. Just wanna ask. People around told me that everyone over here
is pretty nice, and people around there aren't really much of critics. Is that
true?

Hey, I'm actually new here, too! I also really liked the beginning, and I think
the theming overall is just great. Fun fact (you might already know this, but
it surprised me when I figured it out), you can change the of the text in
the comments when you press ctrl-a, and I think that the ` followed by a number
also works. So far, in the few weeks I've been messing around, everyone seems
really nice. If you haven't already, defintiely try the LORD tournament!

Hi Rune!

I think what may have happened is it may have taken a bit for LoD to detect you
disconnected, so it wouldn't let you in. Once the game figured out you weren't
there anymore, it disconnected and then you were able to log in again.

Sorry for the trouble... these old games all have weird quirks...

Exitilus 2.05 Corruption Issues

Unfortunately, recently two times now Exitilus 2.05 has become corrupted,
causing gameplay issues. The game has been fully reset again, hopefully
resolving this issue.

Lord Extreme Corrupted. Restored, Reset And Working Again

Unfortunately, this happens from time to time. In LORD, the player.dat file can
become corrupted. It's a very rare occurence (this is only the 2nd time it's
happened). When it does happen, there's no way to fix it.

LORD Extreme has been restored from backup, has been reset and is working
again. Sorry for the trouble this has caused! Good luck to all that play
Extreme!

Haha I had strange issues.

I am new to BBSing but I love "retro" computng. I'm currently writing this on
a Book8088 with a NecV20. The graphics absolutely crawl across my terminal haha
Abraham Lincoln was right though, 640KB of memory is all anyone really ever
REALLY needs!

Awesome, I thought of buying one of those Book8088 machines, but I already have
a desktop XT clone (NuXT, installed in an ATX case, in case you're interested).
Also a V20, and can run LORD locally, or Telix at 9600 bps nulled into a Linux
machine with Internet access so it can get to telnet boards. I normally just
use syncterm though :)

Over 100,000 Logons!

Earlier this year, we broke 100,000 logons since the BBS started in 2004! There
was about a 10 year period of time the BBS was taken offline before it was
resurrected in 2017 and has been humming along since!

Bre Discord Goes Live! Join Us!

Hey everyone! We've made a decent bit of progress with the BRE discord that
was talked about a couple months back. It's not 100% done, but it's close
enough, and with BRE LEAGUE 000 resetting MAY 27th, we all need to join up so
we can plan ahead and form teams!

The whole idea behind the discord is to work with both the sysops and the
community to create fun, active BRE games again. We are too scattered around on
various inactive leagues - with a small bit of coordination, we can all jump in
to a fresh league TOGETHER when it restarts, and form up in to several small
teams, making for a fun, active and competitive game!

New Door Game: The Ruins Of Kaldore!

I'm excited to share a new door game for the BBS: The Ruins of Kaldore!
This door game is a turn based, rogue-like, medieval combat game. Enter the
ruins in search for "immortality". But beware, evil resides in these ruins,
protecting the treasures within.

The Ruins of Kaldore is like no other door game, featuring a unique combat
system and loot drops. Strategically equip the best gear you can as you venture
deeper into the ruins.

This game was built from scratch using C# and Visual Studio and I'm releasing
it now as version 1.0 alpha. I intend to add features, improvements, bug fixes
and many more items frequently.

The Ruins of Kaldore can be found in the Fighter's Guild as option 7, replacing
Falcon's Eye.

So I've played a few rounds and I gotta say, it's pretty fun. I would guess you
have some things planned, but I just wanted to give you some feedback from a
player's perspective:

1. When you are in the inventory screen, seeing your health would be helpful so
you know what healing potion to use
2. On the inventory screen, if you could chain commands (i.e. 'u 2' or 'd 1')
that would be nice
3. Not sure if it's intentional, but it appears that the leaderboard resets at
the end of the day. Is there a permanent leaderboard, or plans for one?
4. Also, being able to reference the keyword guide while in game would be
helpful. I often forget what certain keywords do when I'm deciding on items.
5. At early levels, penetrating is overpowered (in my experience so far).

Even if none of these get addressed, I'm going to keep playing! Great work

Thank you very much for your feedback. It's very valuable to me. All of your
suggestions are very good. The leaderboard should only reset when I've made
database changes. I must have made a database change recently and pushed those
changes to the BBS. I'll look into a way to preserve scoreboards, if possible.

Something Wrong With Bbslink Bre......

Well here's a good one. I was playing my turns and I knew how many regions I
had before I went to buy some. After I bought the regions I looked again, and
it just didn't look right. It didn't look right at all.

So I checked the (E)mpire status.... and instead of my name at the top it was
Aargons. I am not Aargons. I'm Land of Dreams. I've been Land of Dreams since I
played these games in the 90s. I know I didn't bump my head and sign up as
someone else a few days ago at the reset.

IDK how long it was playing as Aargons. I suspect the entire time bc I bought
regions twice yet my original score was the same.

So it's it great, all my hard work to be #1 just made Aargons #1.

WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF lol

Booch, or anyone, y'all ever see this happen before? I have an idea how it
could happen, just from watching how it connects to play. But I've never seen
it come up as a totally wrong character!

EVERYBODY LOOK at your empire name as it goes by each new turn. Make sure it's
really your empire. I don't even know what to do now that I bought all that
fucking land and it went on Aargons account. Grrrr. You're welcome Aargons.
LOL.

Ahhhhhh funny you should ask!! IDK if it was Mantis (Aargons) online but I was
haunting the manu at 11:59 waiting to get in to buy the limited land. Someone
else was in there at 12:00. I kept hitting the button bc I know..... if you're
inside the BRE menu, you have to exit that and come back after 12:00. So when
that person hopped out (mind you I'm just guessing what they were doing) at
12:01, it let me in. I figured HAHA, I'm in! And I didn't think to look at my
name bc why wouldn't it be me. But there was no indiction that anything was
wrong. It let me in just like it was a normal thing like every other time.

You might have it then. I'll bet you both hit it at the same time. The way
the connect script works is it tells BBSlink's server who is going to connect,
the instant before it makes the connection. Classic race condition /
switcheroo.

I saw that happen live LoD. I was in, (I'm Mantis/Aargons, been Aargons for
decades), and then suddenly it said 'error' and then YOU were in. I waited
over half an hour for you to get off, but gave up. (Was wondering what you
were doing in there for so long lol). Then when I go to play later, it says my
turns are done already, and I could see you carried on from where I was as I
now had a pile of extra regions. (I was excited to try to get on early, as
after the previous days play, I had the most regions thus far, so I was really
surprised to see someone else doing my turns and buying regions for me LOL)

I think I might drop out of that game, I am really growing to dislike the
limited regions available at start thing. It encourages gamey play, and
punishes those that won't (or can't) do it.

It's not as big a deal in inter-BBS games, as you share that disadvantage with
your team, and it's something you can work through with them (or not); but in a
local game, it seriously hampers the play (and enjoyment), in my opinion.

Well, shoot. I'm sorry about the trouble you had, Damage Control. I haven't
seen that happen before, but what Lime says unfortunately makes sense and that
could be what happened. I suppose the only thing to do to avoid this icky bug
is, like what was already said, to check your kingdom name.

Booch, one thing that could help is to set the config to only allow one person
in the game at a time. The synchro docs all say not to bother, since BRE
itself would take care of it - but this is one case where the extra level of
protection would help.

Tips For Lord (2nd Attempt)

Sorry for the double post. I can't figure out how to edit my last message and I
didn't mean to send it half-written.

I'm wondering if anyone has some tips for LoRD to leveling up faster. I've only
missed one day (day 1), and I'm doing all my forest fights, and there's players
with 4x+ my XP. I'm obviously missing something pretty important. Any tips?

A few, although I don't level up very fast either -
1- Listen to Seth Able when you have money in the bank, in case he doubles it.
Supposedly there is a higher chance he'll do that after two forest fights but
hard to tell if true.
2- Every time you are killed, you lose 10% exp, but if you kill someone else,
you get 50% of theirs.
3- Buy armour before weapons, since you can always run away if you survive the
first round, but you can't run away if you don't survive the first round ;)
4- Use the Jennie code to get a slight advantage.

Otherwise, my only other advice is to be lucky

Luck is huge. Jennie codes are key for getting 2 player kills per day, which is
the fastest way to gain experience

I feel the game is way more about how to gather money in most optimal way.
Levelling up becomes almost trivial if you have good enough equipment. You want
to level up of course in order to gain money faster from forest fights, but on
the other hand you want to keep as much money in the bank as every day you log
in you are paid 10% interest for the money you have on your account. There
probably exists some optimal way to solve this levelling up / saving money
problem but it's not very easy. I've considered sometimes trying to solve this
in a way or another, but I think I'm not committed enough. :)

Adding to what others have said... Don't waste your money buying every level of
equipment. Skip some levels and save up over several days to get better
equipment.
